Welcome
Today we dive into the wonderful world of evaluation and model refinement. We will cover various types of evaluation, ranging from AI outputs to forecasts, and by the end of today we will each have unique models to submit to our mini forecasting challenge.
What today covers
By the end of today you will be able to:
- Interpret the core forecast metrics: MAE, 95% PI coverage, interval score, and WIS
- Score your forecasts with the scoringutils package rather than hand-coding the formulas
- Judge whether an AI output is correct, supported, and appropriate before you rely on it
- Revise AI output deliberately by naming the failing component instead of asking for a new answer
- Refine your model with a leading indicator or a different model type, and decide from evidence whether to keep the change
- Produce FluSight-format forecasts and submit them to the class challenge

Where we are in the pipeline
- Activity 1: Data Cleaning and Visuals
- Activity 2: Data Exploration
- Activity 3: Modeling and Forecasting
- Activity 4: Evaluation (today)
- Activity 5: Refinement (today)
You already have forecasts. Today is about finding out whether they are any good, and then doing something about it.
